Decay does not hurt until it reaches the nerve. Gum disease does not hurt at all until the bone is already gone. By the time a mouth is uncomfortable, the cheap window has usually closed.
That is the entire argument for a regular exam. Not that something is wrong, but that if something is starting, this is when it costs the least to deal with.
How Exams And Cleanings Work Here
01. The exam comes first. We are not going to clean teeth we have not looked at yet. Dr. Cortes checks every tooth, the restorations you already have, how your bite comes together, wear patterns, cracks, and the health of the gum and bone around all of it.
02. An oral cancer screening. Tongue, floor of the mouth, cheeks, throat and the lymph nodes in your neck. Two minutes, at every exam, not as an add-on.
03. Measurements. We measure the space between each tooth and the gum around it and call out the numbers. One to three millimeters is healthy. Four gets our attention. Five and above means bacteria are living somewhere a brush cannot reach.
04. The cleaning. Plaque and tartar removed, above and at the gumline, then polished.
05. What we found. You see it on the screen before you leave, and you know what needs doing and in what order.
How OftenYou Should Come
Twice a year suits most people. If your gum measurements are higher, or you have a history of decay, more often is genuinely better and we will tell you why rather than just booking it.
If the exam shows you need a deeper cleaning than a routine one, Dr. Cortes will say so in the chair and give you the cost before anything starts.

Questions about exams and cleanings
About an hour for a routine visit. Your first visit runs closer to two hours, because it includes full X-rays, photographs and a complete treatment plan.
A routine cleaning should not. If your gums are inflamed they may be tender, which is itself information about what is going on down there.
Then you are in good company and you are not going to hear about it. Come in, let us see where things are, and we will build a plan from there.
